Sea Squirts 8 week Opti Camp

Sea Squirts Opti Camp is designed to introduce future junior sailors to the sailing environment.  This course will teach the basics of rigging a boat, basic boat handling, sportsmanship, and water safety. Instruction is done with 2 children in an Opti. Classes feature water games and play designed to prepare the future junior sailor for formal sailing instruction the following year.  For Sea Squirts children must be 8 years old on or before 7/1/17 or entering the third grade in September, 2017, and must pass the Water Safety Test (See G1a).  Camp meets for three hours, two times per week for 8 weeks.   A rental boat is included in registration fee. This class is for 8 and 9 year olds ONLY. Mon AM & Thurs AM

Intro to Optimist Sailing

This class is the program’s introductory or “learn-to-sail” class.  This course will teach the basics of rigging a boat, basic boat handling, sailing fundamentals, seamanship (knots, weather, etc.), sportsmanship, and water safety.  Activities are designed to build confidence while introducing the youngest sailors to fun on and around the water.  Sailors will begin to sail the Optimist by themselves in this class. Optimist Sailors must be 9 years old on or before 7/1/17 or entering the fourth grade in September 2017, must pass the Water Safety Test (see G1a). Classes meet for three hours, two times per week for eight weeks.   Participation in Optimist Green Fleet racing is encouraged.( Limited rental boats available for additional fee, see registration form) Mon AM & Thurs PM

Intro to Sailing

This class is designed for the new sailor OVER age 9 with NO previous sailing experience who want to participate in the sailing environment. Using the Sunfish sailboat this course will teach the basics of rigging a boat, basic boat handling, sailing fundamentals, seamanship (knots, weather, etc.), sportsmanship, and water safety.  Activities are designed to build confidence while introducing the sailors to fun on and around the water.  Sailors must pass the Water Safety Test (see G1a). Classes meet for three hours, two times per week for eight weeks.   This class size is limited. (Limited rental boats available for additional fee, see registration form) Tues & Thurs AM

 

Intermediate Optimist Sailing

This class is for sailors who have completed Introduction to Optimist Sailing and want to continue their progression. Instruction is done in an Optimists with 1 sailor per boat. By completion, sailors will be able to sail on all points of sail in most wind speeds, know all parts of the boat, and tie basic knots. Classes meet for three hours, two times per week for eight weeks. Sailors must pass the Water Safety Test (see G1a)  Participation in Optimist Transitional Green Fleet racing is encouraged.( Limited rental boats available for additional fee, see registration form) Tues AM & Thurs AM (Green Fleet Races Thurs PM)

 

 

Bay Explorers

This class is designed for those who want to be on the water but aren’t necessarily interested in racing. Bay Explorers will provide additional sailing instruction through the use of a recreational sailing/cruising format.  The class will take sailboat trips to local points of interest and participate in water games to enhance boat handling skills. This is not a learn-to-sail class.  Students must demonstrate boat-handling skills equivalent to those required for Intro to Opti Racing. Sailors must pass the Water Safety Test (see G1a). Classes meet for three hours, two times per week for eight weeks. Sailors in this class will sail with multiple sailors and will be introduced to a variety of boats.  Ages 11 and up Mon PM & Tues AM (days may change if class is split)

Intro to Optimist Racing

This program requires a solid understanding of Optimist sailing and provides an introduction to racing and race equipment. Sailors must have completed Intro to Optimist Sailing or Intermediate Optimist Sailing and be recommended for advancement by the instructor staff.  Coaches will cover all aspects of racing on and off the water In this class, beginning racers gain basic racing experience and learn to apply their sailing skills in a racing situation.  Sailors must pass the Water Safety Test (see G1a).  Classes meet for three hours, two times per week for eight weeks. Participation in Transitional Green Fleet (TGF) or White Fleet racing is strongly suggested. Optimist Race Team

Sailors on the Optimist Race Team will refine their racing skills and represent OCYC in multiple regattas. Coaches will cover all aspects of racing on and off the water. The team will travel to and compete in several local regattas, and sailors will have the option to travel to regional competitions.  Sailors MUST have completed Intro to Optimist Racing and have been recommended for this class by their previous instructor.   As with all of our programs, there will be a focus on the Corinthian Spirit and being positive role models on and off the water. Sailors must pass the Water Safety Test (see G1a). Classes meet for three hours a day, two times per week for eight weeks. Wed & Fri AM (races Wed & Fri PM)

Laser 4.7 Racing

To participate in this class, Sailors must be at least 13 years of age on 7/1/17 or entering the 8th grade in September, 2017 and must demonstrate the ability to control the boat single-handedly under various weather conditions.  Sailors should have successfully completed Advanced Optimist Racing and/or must demonstrate equivalent skills and knowledge as determined by the instructors.   In this class sailors will refine their racing skills while competing in weekly OCYC races. Curriculum focuses on boat handling and racing skills, rules, and tactics As with all of our programs, there will be a focus on the Corinthian Spirit and being positive role models on and off the water.  Sailors must pass the Water Safety Test (see G1a). Classes meet for three hours, twice a week for eight weeks. (Limited rental boats available and are rented on a first come first served basis for an additional fee, see registration form) Tues PM & Thurs PM

 

Laser Radial Racing 

To participate in this class, Sailors must be at least 14 years of age on 7/1/17 or entering the 9th grade in September, 2017 and must demonstrate the ability to control the boat single-handedly under various weather conditions.  Sailors should have successfully completed Advanced Optimist Racing as determined by the instructors.  In this class sailors will refine their racing skills while competing in weekly OCYC races. Curriculum focuses on boat handling and racing skills, rules, and tactics As with all of our programs, there will be a focus on the Corinthian Spirit and being positive role models on and off the water.  Sailors must pass the Water Safety Test (see G1a). Classes meets for three hours, twice a week for eight weeks. Rental boats may be used for Club Racing. Laser Race Team (for traveling sailors ONLY)

This class is offered ONLY to registered junior sailors that intend to race ALL Thursday, South Jersey Summer Series Regattas. All Laser age/ability requirements apply. The Laser Race Team will refine their racing skills while competing in regattas locally, as well as regionally. As with all of our programs, there will be a focus on the Corinthian Spirit and being positive role models on and off the water. Sailors must pass the Water Safety Test (see G1a). This class will meet one day a week for three hours a day for eight weeks. Instructors have the right to move sailors to Laser Radial Racing/ Laser 4.7 Racing classes for the additional fee, if sailors decide not to travel. Intermediate Club 420             

C420 classes are scheduled to allow sailors to sail C420's as well as a Laser Radial or Laser 4.7.  To participate in this class, Sailors must be at least 13 years of age on 7/1/17 or entering the 8th grade in September, 2017 and should (1) demonstrate the ability to work as a part of a team: (2) have successfully completed Advanced Opti Racing as determined by the instructors or be able to demonstrate the equivalent skills and knowledge; and (3) demonstrate the ability to capsize and recover the boat with a partner without outside assistance. This course will teach the basics of rigging a C420, an introduction to sailing as a team, basic C420 boat handling and sailing fundamentals.  Classes meet two times a week for eight weeks, with additional races on Monday afternoons. The Club has limited boats available for rental; they will be offered on a first come-first served basis.  Both members of the team must be registered to have a registration considered complete and be placed on the rental list. Club 420 Race Team    

C420 classes are scheduled to allow sailors to sail C420's as well as a Laser Radial or Laser 4.7.  To participate in this class, Sailors must be at least 13 years of age on 7/1/17 or entering the 8th grade in September, 2017 and should (1) demonstrate the ability to work as a part of a team: (2) have successfully completed a year in Intermediate Club 420 or be able to demonstrate the equivalent skills and knowledge; and (3) demonstrate the ability to capsize and recover the boat with a partner without outside assistance. The Club 420 Race Team is geared for those who have graduated from the Opti and want to focus on racing and local regatta participation. Members will learn how to sail with spinnaker and trapeze on C420′s. Those who are interested will also be invited to participate in the Lightning Class which will be rigged with spinnakers this summer.  As with all of our programs, there will be a focus on the Corinthian Spirit and being positive role models on and off the water.  Sailors must pass the Water Safety Test (see G1a).  Classes meet two times a week for eight weeks, followed by races on Monday afternoons. The Club has limited boats available for rental; they will be offered on a first come-first served basis.  (Instructors will designate which teams will participate in this class after the registration process is complete.)  Mon & Wed AM (races Mon PM)

 

 

Junior Lightning Clinic

This class is offered to registered junior sailors that have completed Intro to Opti Sailing and who are a minimum of 13 years old no later than July 1, 2017. This course will introduce sailors to the "Lightning" a three man boat.  Sailors will learn the basics of rigging the boat, basic boat handling, sailing with partners, and water safety.  Activities are designed to build confidence in sailing larger boats as well as developing positive communication with teammates. This class will meet one day a week for three hours over eight weeks and is recommended for all Club 420 sailors. Adult Lightning Clinic - Intro to Sailing

This 'Introduction to Sailing' clinic is offered to OCYC adult members. This course will teach the basics of rigging a boat, basic boat handling, sailing fundamentals, seamanship (knots, weather, etc.), and water safety.  Activities are designed to build confidence while introducing the sailors to fun on the water. It will also provide a basic understanding of sailboat racing and strategy.  This class will meet one day a week for two hours over eight weeks.  Tues Evening
