OCYC 2018 JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM

Sea Squirts 8 week Opti Camp

Sea Squirts Opti Camp is designed to introduce future junior sailors to the sailing environment.  This course will teach the basics of rigging a boat, basic boat handling, sportsmanship, and water safety. Instruction is done with 2 children in an Opti. Classes feature water games and play designed to prepare the future junior sailor for formal sailing instruction the following year.  For Sea Squirts children must be 8 years old on or before 7/1/18 or entering the third grade in September, 2018, and must pass the Water Safety Test.  Camp meets for 3 hours, 2 times per week for 8 weeks.   A rental boat is included in registration fee. This class is for 8 and 9 year olds ONLY. 


Intro to Sailing - Opti

This class is the program’s introductory or “learn-to-sail” class.  This course will teach the basics of rigging a boat, basic boat handling, sailing fundamentals, seamanship, sportsmanship, and water safety. . Activities are designed to build confidence while introducing the youngest sailors to fun on and around the water. We will not encourage racing in this class. Sailors will begin to sail the Optimist by themselves in this class. Optimist Sailors must be 10 years old on or before 7/1/18 or entering the 5th grade in September 2018, must pass the Water Safety Test. Classes meet for 3 hours, 2 times per week for 8 weeks. 10 and 11 year olds  ( Limited rental boats available for an additional fee, see registration form)

Intro to Sailing -Sunfish

This class is designed for the new sailor OVER age 9 with NO previous sailing experience who wants to participate in the sailing environment. Using the Sunfish sailboat this course will teach the basics of rigging a boat, basic boat handling, sailing fundamentals, seamanship, sportsmanship, and water safety.  Activities are designed to build confidence while introducing the sailors to fun on and around the water.  One person per boat, we will not encourage racing in this class. Sailors must pass the Water Safety Test. Classes meet for 3 hours, 2 times per week for 8 weeks. This class size is limited. (Limited rental boats available for an additional fee, see registration form) 

Sailing on Saturdays

This is a new program this summer for families that are only down on weekends.  OCYC would like to extend the sailing program to include Saturday mornings from 9:30 to 12:30.  The lessons would be 1 hour private or 2 hour semi private depending on the interest.  If there is great interest lessons may also be offered on Sunday mornings.  Private lessons would be on a sunfish and semi private would be offered on a lightning.  Students must be 8 years old and pass the Water Safety Test. 

 

Bay Explorers

This class is designed for those who want to be on the water but aren’t necessarily interested in racing. Bay Explorers will provide additional sailing instruction through the use of a recreational format. The class will take sailboat trips to local points of interest. This is not a learn-to-sail class.  Students must demonstrate boat-handling skills equivalent to those required after taking Intro to Opti Racing. Sailors must pass the Water Safety Test.  Classes meet for 3 hours, 2 times per week for 8 weeks. Sailors in this class will sail with multiple sailors of 13 years and up. 

Intro to Optimist Racing

This program requires a solid understanding of Optimist or Sunfish sailing and provides an introduction to racing and race equipment. Sailors must have completed Intro to Optimist  or Sunfish Sailing and be recommended for advancement by the instructor staff.  Coaches will cover all aspects of racing on and off the water.  Sailors must pass the Water Safety Test.  Classes meet for 3 hours, 2 times per week for 8 weeks. Participation in Transitional Green Fleet (TGF) or White Fleet racing is strongly suggested. 12 year olds (Limited rental boats available for additional fee, see registration form) races Wed & Fri PM

Grandparents week

This is a new program this summer.  Please introduce your grandchildren to sailing with OCYC. Any child age 7 and older is welcome.  The children  will be sailing with instructors on  the various boats at the yacht club.  The program will be offered twice, the week of July 16-20 and August 20-24th, 9:30-12:30. One of the days in August will be an open sail with additional boats and many of the junior members that are active in the program.  This is a great way for children to get a feel for the water and enjoy a morning of sailing.  Please stay for lunch. Students must pass the Water Safety Test.


Laser 4.7 and Laser Radial Racing

To participate in this class, Sailors must be at least 13 years of age on 7/1/18 or entering the 8th grade in September, 2018 and must demonstrate the ability to control the boat single-handedly under various weather conditions.  Sailors should have successfully completed Intro to Optimist Racing and/or must demonstrate equivalent skills and knowledge as determined by the instructors.   In this class sailors will refine their racing skills while competing in weekly OCYC races. Curriculum focuses on boat handling and racing skills, rules, and tactics As with all of our programs, there will be a focus on the Corinthian Spirit and being positive role models on and off the water.  Sailors must pass the Water Safety Test. Classes meet for three hours, twice a week for eight weeks. (Limited rental boats available and are rented on a first come first served basis for an additional fee, see registration form) 

 

Friday Night Racing -  Late Teen Young Adult

OCYC would like to offer a venue for the sailors that have graduated from the program or know how to sail and would like to continue to race in a fun environment with friends.  A 6:00 gun with a start and finish line set in front of the club.  Please see OCYC Friday Night series calendar for race dates.  Use your own laser, sunfish, C420 or rent a boat from the club.  After the race a section of the upstairs deck with be reserved for the sailors and friends to enjoy the night with food and drink.


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Rocking Chair Regatta

Remember sailing a short course in front of the club, with PC Parker as MC??  

These races were fun and they are back!!  The sunfish fleet will be used for these races.  Stayed tuned for details.  

These races are open to all yacht club members, so come one come all.

C420 Race Team and C420 Team Racing   

C420 classes are scheduled to allow sailors to sail C420's as well as a Laser Radial or Laser 4.7.  To participate in this class, Sailors must be at least 13 years of age on 7/1/18 or entering the 8th grade in September, 2018 and should (1) demonstrate the ability to work as a part of a team: (2) have successfully completed Intro to Opti Racing (3) demonstrate the ability to capsize and recover the boat with a partner without outside assistance.  This class will teach the basics of rigging a C420, an introduction to sailing as a team, basic C420 boat handling skills and sailing fundamentals.  Classes meet two times a week for 8 weeks, with additional races once a week.  Both members of the team must be registered to have a registration considered complete and be placed on the rental list.  C420 Team Racing builds on these concepts, and introduces the concept of working as a team towards winning a race.  Instead of the other boats on our team are more important than your individual score.  How to improve your teammates finish is just as important as improving your own finish.  (The club has a certain amount of C420s available for rent on a first come first serve basis.  Both members of the team must be registered to have a registration considered complete and be placed on the rental list. 

Junior Lightning Clinic

This class is offered to registered junior sailors that have completed Intro to Opti Racing and who are a minimum of 13 years old no later than July 1, 2018. This course will introduce sailors to the "Lightning" a three person boat.  Sailors will learn the basics of rigging the boat, basic boat handling, sailing with partners, and water safety.  Activities are designed to build confidence in sailing larger boats as well as developing positive communication with teammates. This class will meet 1 day a week for 3 hours over 8 weeks.  Tues PM

Adult Lightning Clinic - Intro to Sailing

This 'Introduction to Sailing' clinic is offered to OCYC adult members. This course will teach the basics of rigging a boat, basic boat handling, sailing fundamentals, seamanship, and water safety.  Activities are designed to build confidence while introducing the sailors to fun on the water. It will also provide a basic understanding of sailboat racing and strategy.  This class will meet one day a week for 2 hours over 8  weeks.  Tues Evening
